It has been possible to fight Psoriasis with biological drugs since 2003. These "biologics" directly influence misdirected immune processes and therefore directly interfere with the origin of psoriasis. Some biologics approved for psoriatic treatment inhibit a certain messenger agent of the immune system, which abounds during the inflammatory reaction and further promotes the ongoing inflammation. Other biologics inhibit certain immune cells involved in the attacks on the skin structures or intervene in the disease's process in a different area. Biological drugs - partially in combination with standard therapeutics - are applied in moderately-severe to severe psoriasis, if the patient had previously not responded to standard therapy with a systemic drug.
Although biologics are applied alone or in combination with other therapeutics, at currently very good success rates, a great medical need for effective and tolerable psoriasis drugs continues to exist.
