A new therapeutical strategy is followed by the monoclonal antibody BT-063 from Biotest. BT-063 represents a modern treatment strategy against SLE, which is directed against an important immune messenger substance (see Fig.).
The antibody has already been proven in a series of preclinical studies. A small pilot study proved the antibody's application to be safe, well-tolerated and very effective. There was a distinct decrease in patients' symptoms over the course of six months, and a conspicuous effect occurred within the first three weeks. The good tolerability and safety profile of the therapeutic antibody was tested in a healthy volunteer trial. This trial is concluded and the final report is currently being prepared.
If these expectations are fulfilled, Biotest will realize the further clinical development together with a strategic partner. Due to the increased medical need and the specific mode of action of BT-063 Biotest anticipates, based on current knowledge, a high degree of market acceptance. Since the immune messenger substance presumably neutralized by BT-063 also plays a major role in other autoimmune diseases, Biotest deems it probable that the scope of indications of the Biotest antibody will be further extended in the future.
